A. LEE RIGBY
Lee Rigby handles a wide variety of commercial disputes and litigation matters. Lee’s clients generally view him as a creative problem solver who has an eye towards effective, efficient representation. Lee’s experience includes bet-the-company litigation, work on energy and utility related matters and significant recoveries in collection matters. In addition to trial work, Lee has deep experience with state and local government, working as a government relations consultant and routinely dealing with government contracts, bid protests, procurement matters, and the Texas Public Information Act.
Before forming Rigby Slack in 2019, Lee started his career at Fulbright & Jaworski, LLP, spent three years as General Counsel of a private equity-backed government services company and was managing partner of his prior firm. When not in the office or chasing his wife and kiddos around, Lee can be found trying, unsuccessfully, to locate trout or, most likely, on the golf course.
CATHLEEN C. SLACK
Cathleen handles commercial real estate and business transactions for private and public clients. Her commercial real estate practice is focused on acquisition, development, leasing and finance for commercial properties, including condominium regimes. In her business transactions practice, she assists with business formations, mergers and acquisitions, private offerings, and general business transactions.
Cathleen holds an escrow officer license and is a fee attorney for Heritage Title Company, Stewart Title Company, Prominent Title Company, Independence Title Company, and Texas National Title Company. She enjoys long-standing relationships with her clients including lenders, developers, landlords, tenants, and business owners. Cathleen believes her coffee-making skills have been regaled world-wide. Cathleen is attempting to become a full-time resident of Hawaii. When not dreaming of Hawaii, Cathleen enjoys outdoor activities with her husband, daughter, and yellow lab, and catching live music when it isn’t past her bedtime
DAVID C. LAWRENCE
David is a skilled and experienced trial lawyer who focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation, including disputes concerning business issues, contracts, intellectual property, real estate, construction, securities, employment, other business-related disputes and select family law matters. David’s clients turn to him regularly to help them resolve their most important legal problems and appreciate his keen attention to detail, responsiveness and creative problem-solving skills.
David has spent his entire legal career in Austin. Before co-founding Rigby Slack, David practiced for thirteen years with Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, LLP and as a shareholder with Munsch Hardt Kopf & Harr, P.C. David graduated with honors from both the University of Texas McCombs School of Business with a BBA in Finance and from The University of Texas School of Law. David was recognized as a Texas Super Lawyer by Thompson Reuters in 2021 and as a Texas Rising Star by Thompson Reuters in 2012-2017. In 2021, David was named one of Austin's Top Attorneys by Austin Monthly Magazine. David spends his free time with his wife and two children and enjoys live music, Texas Longhorn football and travel.
E. JOE BERGER III
Joey currently handles real estate transactions in Texas and throughout the United States. While his practice focuses on a broad range of real estate matters, Joey has substantial experience representing clients in the acquisition, disposition, construction, development, financing, leasing and management of various property types, including student housing, multi-family, hospitality, office, industrial, retail, restaurant and mixed-use. Joey also represents clients in transactions involving condominiums, residential subdivisions and farm and ranch properties.
Prior to forming Rigby Slack, Joey was a partner with Dickinson Wright PLLC and Egan Nelson LLP in Austin and also previously practiced at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP in Dallas. While not in the office, Joey enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, playing golf, fishing, reading and following college and professional sports. Joey will return in his next life as the second baseman for the Houston Astros.
KATHERINE C. AKINC
Kat handles a range of estate planning, trust administration, and probate matters in her practice. She works with a broad spectrum of clients to develop personalized and tax-efficient estate plans, including wills, revocable trusts and incapacity documents. Kat also advises on and helps implement business succession planning and sophisticated lifetime wealth transfer techniques, such as intentionally defective grantor trusts, split interest trusts and others. In addition to planning, Kat represents both executors, trustees, and beneficiaries in probate, estate and trust administration, including the preparation and filing of federal estate tax returns.
Kat is board certified in Estate Planning & Probate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization as well as a Fellow of the American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel. Kat is a regular speaker at Texas State Bar conferences and other events. She earned her law degree from The University of Texas School of Law and her undergraduate degree from Rice University.
At some point Kat intends to slow down, but these days she is constantly running – chasing her two young sons, taking a class at OrangeTheory or just working off the excessive amounts of caffeine she consumes.
Chris is an environmental lawyer. His practice focuses on local, state and federal environmental permitting and litigation matters. Chris represents rock and sand mining companies, concrete batch plants, asphalt plants, fertilizer warehouses and crude oil terminals. He also represents clients in contested SOAH proceedings and OAG enforcement lawsuits. He performs environmental compliance audits for limestone quarries, frac sand plants and chemical facilities. Chris serves as General Counsel to the Texas Aggregates & Concrete Association. He is on the Board of Directors for the Texas Grain and Feed Association and is a member of the Texas Ag Industries Association. A registered patent attorney, Chris holds a Master of Science in Environmental Toxicology. He brings a unique technical perspective to client matters. Prior to his private practice, Chris served as an in-house attorney for the TCEQ’s Air and Water Quality Divisions.
Chris is, for better or worse, the firm’s sole Texas Aggie. He studied biology and chemistry, and was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets, Company P-2. Before joining Rigby Slack, Chris was a partner at Winstead, PC in Austin. Importantly, Chris is the proud father of two boys who enjoy school, church, basketball, football, reading, Fortnite, hunting and fishing. Chris is a frequent guest speaker to Texas A&M’s Biology Department and Texas Tech’s Law School and Environmental Toxicology Department. He lives in Dripping Springs and grew up in Blanco.
PATRICK J. COMERFORD
Pat is a trial lawyer focusing on defending clients in complex products liability, toxic tort and personal injury litigation. From product safety oversight and recalls to insurance coverage issues and claims to risk assessment and management, Pat counsels large international insurance companies, manufacturers, retailers, as well as smaller lean start-up businesses and organizations. Pat has represented numerous commercial airlines; international and domestic insurers; consumer, industrial and military product manufacturers; and national retailers in both state and federal courts of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Texas.
Parallel to his traditional practice, Pat has also become the legal authority on the impact of next-generation manufacturing on product liability and insurance, in particular, Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing. Pat routinely injures himself being the proud father of two beautiful children and playing club rugby.
Al Golden is a Senior Counsel at Rigby Slack, and his practice is devoted entirely to estate planning, probate and trust administration. Al is Board Certified by Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Estate Planning and Probate Law and is also a Certified Public Accountant.
Mr. Golden was presented the Outstanding Probate and Trust Lawyer Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 by the Real Estate, Probate and Trust Law Section of the State Bar of Texas. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel.
Al completed four victory laps at the University of Texas at Austin: earning a B.B.A. (1962—Accounting), a B.A. (1965), a LL.B (1965), and a J.D. (1968). Al has received every meaningful honor a lawyer can earn (Who’s Who in American Law, Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers, among others) and is a distinguished speaker and instructor in the trusts and estates field.
In his spare hours, Al spends considerable time keeping his wife of 54 years happy (by spending more days at the office). Al also intends to defend his Solitaire World Championship in the coming years.
QUINN T. MARTINDALE
Quinn represents a diverse set of clients in real estate and corporate transactions. He enjoys assisting clients with forming their business and negotiating commercial leases or purchase and sale agreements. Quinn has worked with clients across a wide range of industries, with a particular focus in hospitality.
Before joining his current firm, Quinn worked with a small law firm with clients in the golf industry where he represented buyers in the purchase of member-owned country clubs. Quinn is a proud University of Texas alum and is wholly responsible for maintaining peace at the office.
WILLIAM B. FARNSWORTH
Will represents clients in a variety of commercial real estate transactions including leasing, acquisitions, development and financing. With a background in representing commercial mortgage lenders, developers, landlords and tenants, Will is dedicated to protecting the interests of clients by anticipating risks and avoiding common pitfalls in complex transactions.
Prior to joining Rigby Slack, Will did the “big firm thing” in Houston and Dallas before settling in Austin. When not in the office, Will can be found spending his free time with his wife and two kids and trying to solve Austin’s traffic challenges (while refusing to accept that Mopac is not, in fact, a loop).
SOPHIE I. MYERS
Sophie represents clients in a variety of complex commercial litigation cases in federal and state courts as well as before arbitration panels on a nationwide basis. Sophie’s practice includes business litigation, real estate litigation, and securities litigation. Sophie also has experience representing developers in eminent domain and land value litigation. Sophie regularly counsels clients in a broad range of business matters including, breach of contract, theft of trade secrets, fraud, and other business torts. Sophie prides herself on being detail oriented, trustworthy, and a zealous advocate for clients but never loses sight of what is in the client’s best business and economic interests.
Prior to joining Rigby Slack, PLLC, Sophie practiced as an associate at Meister Seelig & Fein LLP in New York City, where she worked on high stakes commercial litigation matters often involving real estate. Sophie started her career as an associate at boutique law firm representing financial institutions, including broker dealers and investment advisors in FINRA arbitrations.
When not in the office, Sophie can be found tending to her new farm and its animal inhabitants (chickens, cows, horses). Sophie remains steadfast in her desire to use “y’all” effectively.
WILLIAM A. DUNCAN
Will’s practice involves complex dispute resolution and litigation in federal and state courts. Will’s experience includes work on disputes involving complex contracts, intellectual property, business torts, real estate transactions, technology licensing, environmental remediation, and antitrust issues. Will also has experience advising clients with respect to environmental and antitrust regulatory compliance.
Prior to joining Rigby Slack, Will practiced as an associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP in New York and served as a law clerk for the Honorable Orlando Garcia, Chief Judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas. Will is a graduate of Columbia Law School, where he was a member of the Columbia Law Review, and Duke University, where he studied mechanical engineering.
In his free time, Will enjoys golfing, running, traveling, and enjoying all that Central Texas has to offer with his giant four-legged goofball.
MICHELLE 'MAGGIE' PERALES
Michelle is a senior paralegal with over 20 years’ experience who concentrates in the area of commercial real estate loans, acquisitions, sales transactions and title/survey issues. Michelle has extensive knowledge and experience in commercial real estate transactions, working with and on behalf of lenders, developers, landlords, tenants, buyers and sellers. She prepares commercial real estate documentation for the acquisition, sale, leasing, development and financing of retail, office, warehouse and industrial properties.
She also has extensive experience in corporate law including entity formation and governance. Michelle also acts in the capacity as escrow officer for Heritage Title Company of Austin, Stewart Title Company, Independence Title Company, Prominent Title Company and Texas National Title Company, in assisting with the issuance of title insurance policies for buyers and lenders. Michelle is a Certified Remote Online Notary.
CARA L. HOLT
Firm Administrator and Paralegal
Cara handles the operations and financial management of the firm. As a paralegal, Cara has a broad transactional background assisting with asset sales, financing, and the purchase and sale of commercial real estate. Cara has worked with commercial lending clients in loan transactions and construction loans, including loans under the SBA 7(a) and 504 programs.
She has experience in corporate law including entity formation, governance, and mergers & acquisitions. Cara has supported counsel in commercial, environmental, surface water, and groundwater litigation cases.
